My 1973 Sequoia was purchased used in 1976. It looked nice, but was a rental unit and in very poor mechanical condition. In 8 years, I replaced the front wheel bearings several times for the Sequoia and also once for my 1970 Toronado. There was always grit between the seals, but not on the bearing side. The second sealing flap kept the grit out
It is critical to clean off the outer surface of the casting before removing the constant velocity joint and to keep all dirt out of the area of the bearing. If not, the next time you open the hub bearing, there will be a dull surface where the dirt got into the rollers and ground the surfaces of the bearing.
Modern cars have a different construction that seals the bearing even if the axel is removed.
